Cobra Warrior 2023/2 action from RAF Waddington , RAF Mildenhall and Lakenheath.

Cobra Warrior 2023/2 exercise is centred at RAF Waddington, as was "CW1/2023."The exercise is organised and controlled by 92sqadron RAF based at Waddington alongside the Air and Space Warfare Centre.

This second part of the legendary bi-annual training exercise featured F-18s of the Royal Canadian Airforce to RAF Waddington, E-3 AWACS from the NATO joint command at Gilenkirchen Germany, and the very photogenic Italian Air Force G550-CAEW (Spy Plane) based at Pratica di Mare outside of Rome.

Further South at RAF Mildenhall, this base is usually involved as it is the home of the 100th Air Refuelling Wing United States Air Force Europe, with a significant focus on air-to-air refuelling. This time, a nice difference would see RAF Mildenhall turned into a fighter town with no less than seventeen USAF European-based F-16 Jets from Spangalehem airbase in Germany. The 100 Sqns KC-135 tanker aircraft were supported by the Arizona Air National Guard with their two nicely marked KC-135 Tanker aircraft. Mildenhall also featured a mix of KC-135s and KC-46s involved in dragging jets F-16s home from the Middle East.

The Canadian Air Force had its own CC-150 Tanker aircraft, call sign "Hoser," and very disappointingly, based at RAF Lossimouth for the exercise.

Further Tankers came from the RAF at RAF Brize Norton and the Italian Airforce flying up from Italy on daily needs.

RAF Leeming was hosting three HH-60s from Aviano Air Base in Northern Italy who would carry out CSAR missions.

Indeed, this time around, hundreds of enthusiasts enjoyed fabulous blue skies and sunshine during the opening week of the exercise.

This report is not an in-depth analysis of the exercise but a photo diary of the events and moments that make it unique to Military aviation enthusiasts.

Air Defender 2023 NATOs largest Air exercise, a full photo report from this unique event.

"Air Defender sends a clear message that NATO is prepared to defend every inch of its Allied territory."

Known as a transatlantic reinforcement of NATO, Air Defender has been in planning since early 2018. It witnessed its first operational flying day on June 12, 2023, featuring 250 operational aircraft, many of which belonged to United States Air National Guard units. These aircraft had been air-to-air refuelled across the Atlantic the previous week and included F-15C, F-16C, and A-10C models. The United States Navy contributed EA-18G, F/A-18F, and F/A-18E aircraft. European forces also participated, with the Finnish Air Force sending four F/A-18Cs, the Hungarian Air Force providing JAS-39C Gripens, Turkey offering F-16s, and the United Kingdom contributing RAF Typhoon FGR.4s.

The fast jet operations were primarily based in Northern Germany at the Bundeswehr’s Luftwaffe. "Air Defender sends a clear message that NATO is prepared to defend every inch of its Allied territory."

European forces also participated, with the Finnish Air Force sending four F/A-18Cs, the Hungarian Air Force providing JAS-39C Gripens, Turkey offering F-16s, and the United Kingdom contributing RAF Typhoon FGR.4s.

The fast jet operations were primarily based in Northern Germany at the Bundeswehr’s Luftwaffe Hohn (ETNH) and Schleswig-Jagel (ETNS) airbases.

This photo report showcases the aircraft seen and photographed at these two Northern airbases and others further south, including Lechfeld and Spangdahlem, where Greek F-16s and F-35s from the Vermont Air National Guard were present, respectively. Neuburg featured a trio of AldA EF-2000s alongside its home-based aircraft, while Laage hosted a pair of Italian F-2000S jets working in conjunction with their host's EF-2000s.

The Luftwaffe supplied numerous aircraft, while other air assets flew missions from their European home bases to support Air Defender 23. A total of 25 nations participated in this extensive exercise.

While capturing the photos below, one cannot help but reflect on the bygone years in Europe and the UK during the early 1970s and 1980s when many USAF aircraft filled the skies above. Hohn (ETNH) and Schleswig-Jagel (ETNS) airbases.
