USAF Mildenhall Photos from September 1978

Anybody interested in military aircraft in the United Kingdom will have visited RAF Mildenhall, the huge airbase wholly operated by the United States Airforce. The opportunities are excellent, whether for their renowned airshow or a day's aircraft spotting or photography.

The following photographs were taken from Farmer Johns field, now the campsite, Folly Road and the "hump", as we used to call it.

The following photographs were predominantly taken from the last spot.

65-0966 WC-130H. 53rd WRS USAF Mildenhall1978, the sighting of a WC-130H back then was often connected with a 'Coronet' exercise impending. They would fly missions over the Ocean following the planned deployment route while monitoring the weather conditions the fast jets would encounter flying to their destination.

French airforce Beech 18S and a T-33A

French airforce Beech 18S and a T-33A, probably 14086, parked at the back of Mildenhall airbase. Sadly, I do not have the serial for the Beech 18S. A few years after seeing this French Air Force T-33A, I was lucky enough to see two more examples as they made a refuelling stop at the old Jeddah International Airport in Saudi Arabia. They were delivered to Singapore as ex 117414 to 908 and ex 117497 to 376.

Next stop RAF Bentwaters.

RAF Mildenhall Air Fete 1978.

Part one of a three-part report from East Anglia.

It was early Autumn 1978. I was going to Suffolk in East Anglia and its many United States Airforce bases, maybe for the last time in the next decade, as I was about to leave the United Kingdom. While having a pub lunch along the way, my car was stolen. What to do? Well, report it to the Police, find a railway station, stay calm and be positive. Easier said than done, but eventually, the train stopped at Lakenheath, just a short distance from Mildenhall. These neighbouring towns on the fenlands have one thing in common: they both have air force bases and are American bases.

As a Military aviation enthusiast, Suffolk has long been a favourite destination, with its long hot Summers spent camping in East Anglia, enjoying the planes by day and Tolly Cobbold beer by night. Days often consumed with the locals on the beaches of Sizewell and Aldeburgh.

With those fond memories, Suffolk seemed the right area to spend some time before my departure to foreign shores, and of course, Mildenhall was holding its iconic Air Fete, one of the UK's and Europe's top airshows, and it was not about to disappoint in 1978...
